Mouth Ulcer Treatments

Overview

A mouth ulcer is a sore or open lesion in the mouth. They often cause pain and discomfort, and may be maintained by inflammation and / or secondary infection.

Mouth ulcers are usually round and white/pink in colour and usually occur inside the lips, inside the cheeks, on the bottom of the mouth or under the surface of the tongue.

Mouth ulcers will usually only last a couple of weeks, especially if treated. However, if your mouth ulcers last longer than this, it may be a sign of a more serious problem.

Causes

Common causes of mouth ulcers include stress, anxiety, hormonal changes, injury or damage to the mouth, sharp edges of broken teeth, poorly fitted dentures and braces. As stated above, if your mouth ulcer remains for longer than a couple of weeks, it could be a sign of more serious underlying problem.

Ulcer Treatments

Topical treatments can be used to numb the sore area to improve discomfort, especially when eating or drinking. Some topical treatments also create a protective barrier over the ulcer which helps prevent irritation from food or drink.

There are also a range of mouthwashes which contain antibacterial agents to help prevent infection. These mouthwashes may also contain a local anaesthetic to help manage discomfort associated with pain.

High dose B group vitamins may also be used to assist immunity and speed of healing.
